Watauga Lake - Boating -Pontoon

Watauga Lake, your northeastern Tennessee retreat, where
 “Beautiful Water Touches the Sky.”

Watauga Lake, surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest in northeastern Tennessee, is rated by the Tennessee Valley Authority as the third cleanest lake in the U.S. This stunningly beautiful and pristine body of water was formed in 1948 when the Wilbur Dam on the Watauga River was completed. Watauga Lake is the highest elevation lake in the TVA system, shimmering at 1,959 feet above sea level.

The lake is a man-made reservoir built for flood prevention, creation of aquatic habitat, and power generation. Recreation and tourism have produced added economic and quality-of-life benefits for Watauga's surrounding communities. It is fed by the Elk and Watauga Rivers springing from the highlands of North Carolina and Roan Creek from Tennessee.

Lake Watauga is over 16 miles long and covers approximately 10 square miles. Its maximum depth is more than 300 feet. The countless private winding coves of Watauga Lake create 106 miles of shoreline, but only 46 miles of the shoreline are privately owned. The majority of the shore is protected as public land, particularly the Cherokee National Forest, which means Watauga Lake will preserve it’s reputation as the most pristine andbeautiful lake in the Appalachians.
